Berber Rugs — Beni Ourain, Azilal & Boujad

Beni Ourain Berber rug from the Atlas Mountains — Djoharian Collection

“Ivory wool from the High Atlas, dyed by hand, woven by women, written as a textile language passed mother to daughter.”

      A Living Tribal Tradition

Berber rugs are hand-woven by the indigenous Amazigh (Berber) peoples of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The largest and most diverse production comes from the Moroccan Atlas mountains, where each tribal area has developed its own distinct visual language over generations.

The Djoharian Collection specialises in hard-to-find large and oversized Beni Ourain rugs as well as the most distinctive tribal works from the High and Middle Atlas.

      The Major Berber Traditions

Beni Ourain — The Iconic Ivory Rug

The Beni Ourain tribe of the Middle Atlas produces the world’s most recognisable Berber rugs: thick, soft, undyed ivory wool with geometric brown lozenges, diamonds and stripes. Used as bedding and floor covering in the harsh Atlas winters, they translate beautifully into modern Scandinavian, minimalist and “organic modern” interiors.

      Azilal — Colourful Storytelling

From the Azilal region of the central High Atlas: vibrant colours on an ivory or natural ground, with personal, almost diary-like patterns. Each Azilal rug is one woman’s narrative — making them sought-after collector pieces with rugs reminiscent of Persian Gabbeh in their spontaneity.

      Boujad, Shrouit & Telsnit

Saturated madder reds, deep aubergine and warm earth tones, often with high pile and flushy texture. The character of an antique Boujad is closest to a Persian Gabbeh — dominant colour fields with floating tribal motifs.

      Zemmour, Taznakht & Hanbel

The bold, graphic kilim-style flatweaves of the Zemmour and Taznakht tribes — strong colour blocks, ceremonial patterns. Often referred to in their flatwoven form as Hanbel, or in the bridal variant as Handira.

      Construction & Materials

      • Pile: hand-spun Atlas highland wool, often with natural lanolin retained — soft, lustrous and naturally stain-resistant
      • Knotting: traditionally the symmetric (Berber) knot, dense and durable
      • Pile height: from low-pile flatweaves (Hanbel) to deep, plush 2–3 cm pile (Beni Ourain)
      • Pigments: mineral and vegetable dyes for coloured pieces; undyed wool for ivory Beni Ourain
