Sarouk Rugs: The Legacy of Arak & American Classics
"A synthesis of robust highland wool and floral elegance—Sarouk carpets represent the golden era of Persian export artistry."
The Arak Weaving District: From Sultanabad to Sarough
The name Sarouk (also known as Saruk, Sarough, Sarok, or Sarogh) is synonymous with some of the most durable and prestigious carpets in the world. Originating from the Arak province (formerly Sultanabad), this weaving district encompasses legendary centers such as Mohajeran, Ghiasabad, Jozan, Malayer, Mahal, Wiss, and Lilihan.
Each sub-region offers a distinct aesthetic: from the sought-after antique Mahal and Malayer rugs (knotted between 1880 and 1930) to the extremely fine Ghiasabad masterpieces. Detailed technical data on these specific provenances can be found in the Jozan Carpet Encyclopedia. The architectural importance of these designs is recognized by global institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A).
The Era of the "American Sarouk"
A fascinating chapter in Persian textile history is the "American Sarouk" (1900–1940). These carpets were custom-knotted for the luxury US market, featuring a characteristic detached floral spray pattern (no central medallion). Predominantly using rich tones of rust, deep red, indigo blue, and beige, they often featured a thick, plush pile and high-quality highland wool.
Since the 1970s, many of these masterpieces have been re-imported to Europe, where they are celebrated as re-imports for their unique vintage patina and exceptional durability.
Structural Integrity & Quality
- • Materials: Resilient highland wool on a cotton foundation, typically featuring the blue weft thread in antique pieces.
- • Knot Density: Ranging from approx. 90,000 knots/m² (coarse Mahal) to 640,000+ knots/m² (high-grade Ghiasabad).
- • Weaving Technique: Primarily the Persian (asymmetrical) knot, known for allowing intricate floral detail.
