Arijana Afghan Kilim — Hand-Woven Wool in a Bold Multicolour Chevron
Hand-woven by Afghan workshops in the Arijana tribal idiom — a continuous zigzag of camel, cream, lilac, petrol, blue and orange-red in hand-spun, naturally dyed highland wool.
The Arijana Tribal Line
Arijana kilims are hand-woven in workshops of southern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border — a region with a long tradition of tribal flatweave. The Arijana idiom reinterprets the historic tribal designs of the area in highland wool, with colour drawn from natural plant dyes. The wool is hand-spun, the structure is a pure flatweave with fringes on both ends, and every piece carries the slight irregularities that mark genuine hand-woven work.
Colour and Design
This piece is built on a striking chevron — a continuous zigzag running the full width of the rug, band after band, from selvedge to selvedge. Each zigzag line is woven in its own colour, so the surface reads as a layered sequence of waves: camel and ochre, cream, lilac and violet, petrol-turquoise, orange-red, cornflower blue and soft grey, closed at the lower end by a narrow band of saffron yellow. The natural plant dyes give the colours a quiet, lived-in register rather than the hard brightness of synthetic dye, and the gentle striation within each band is the signature of hand-spun wool.
Presence in the Room
At 200 × 150 cm (3.0 m², approx. 5 × 6.6 ft) this is a medium-format piece. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- In front of a sofa: A textile anchor under a coffee table for a two- to three-seat sofa group — the chevron brings rhythm and colour without overpowering the room.
- Bedroom anchor: Beside a bed as a soft, colourful step in the morning, or at the foot end as a graphic accent.
- Dining for four: Under a small round or square table; the flatweave construction makes chair movement easy.
