Tibetan Tiger Silk Rug
180 × 90 cm · Amber & Blue · Khaden Format
Hand-knotted in Kathmandu from a single plied yarn of two strands Matka silk and one strand highland wool — 66% silk, 34% wool, an abstract tiger-stripe design.
Heritage and Knotting Tradition
The tiger rug is one of the oldest motifs in Himalayan textile culture. In the Tibetan tradition the tiger stands for power, protective strength and spiritual vigilance, and tiger rugs were used in monasteries and palaces as honoured seats and ceremonial pieces. This rug carries the motif in its abstract form — a rhythmic field of tiger stripes rather than a figural animal, the pelt pattern reduced to flowing bands that run the length of the piece, framed by a border in the same palette.
This piece is hand-knotted in the workshops of Kathmandu, Nepal, by experienced artisans in the Tibetan knotting tradition. It is knotted from a single plied yarn in which two strands of Matka silk and one strand of hand-spun Changpai highland wool are twisted together — a 66% silk, 34% wool composition carried evenly through the entire pile. Changpai, from sheep raised above 4,000 metres on the Tibetan plateau, is exceptionally long-staple and lustrous; the Matka silk lends the yarn its saturated sheen. Because silk and wool sit within the same thread, the surface shifts between matte warmth and lacquered shimmer as the light moves — the optical depth that distinguishes a high-grade Tibetan piece from a flat workshop production. The pile height is approximately 13 mm, with a particularly soft, plush hand.
Colour and Composition
The palette pairs a warm amber-and-gold ground with deep blue stripes running across the field and a blue border framing the piece. Because the same silk-rich yarn runs throughout, the blue passages and the golden ground both carry the silk's sheen — the contrast is one of colour and light, not of material. As the light moves across the pile, the stripes lift and recede, and the whole field seems to glow from within.
Presence in the Room
At 180 × 90 cm (1.6 m²) this is the classical Tibetan Khaden format. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- Living room statement piece: the amber-and-blue palette is built for a contemporary living room with mixed materials — wood, leather, brass and stone. The silk-rich pile catches every light source in the room.
- Study or premium office: the saturated blue and the gold reading communicate seriousness and presence — a textile that signals quality without ornament-overload.
- Wall hanging or collector's piece: the silk-rich construction and the optical depth make this an outstanding candidate for textile-art wall placement, where the shifting light becomes part of the work.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the silk-and-wool plied yarn mean for this rug?
Two strands of Matka silk and one strand of highland wool are twisted together into a single yarn before knotting, giving a 66% silk, 34% wool composition that runs evenly through the whole pile. The silk carries sheen and colour saturation; the wool gives body and resilience. The result is a surface that shifts between matte warmth and a lacquered shimmer as the light moves — softer underfoot than an all-silk rug, with more depth than an all-wool one.
Can this design be ordered in another size or colour?
Yes. This is a Djoharian Design made-to-order piece. The motif can be produced in any dimension, with the colour palette matched to your Pantone or RAL specification from over 1,200 yarn shades, and in higher knot densities on request. We supply a 30 × 30 cm reference sample for approval before full production; lead time is typically 4–6 months depending on size.
How do I care for a silk-rich rug?
Vacuum gently without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Use a non-slip underlay on smooth floors. Blot spills immediately with cold water and a light cotton cloth — do not rub. Because of the high silk content, we recommend professional hand-washing for any deeper clean rather than home treatment. Kept out of prolonged direct sunlight, the colours stay saturated for decades.
