Tibetan Tiger Silk Rug
180 × 90 cm · Amber & Charcoal · Khaden Format
The classical Tibetan tiger — hand-knotted in Kathmandu from 66 % silk and 34 % Changpai highland wool, in the traditional Khaden format.
Heritage and Knotting Tradition
The Tibetan tiger rug is one of the oldest motifs in Himalayan textile culture. For centuries, tiger rugs in this format were used in Tibetan monasteries and palaces as seats for high lamas during meditation, as covers for ceremonial columns, and as honour places for rulers and teachers. The tiger itself symbolises power, protective strength and spiritual vigilance — the embodiment of the awakened mind in Vajrayana Buddhism.
This piece is hand-knotted in the workshops of Kathmandu, Nepal, by experienced artisans in the Tibetan knotting tradition. The material composition is 66 % silk and 34 % hand-spun Changpai highland wool. Changpai — from sheep raised above 4,000 metres on the Tibetan plateau — is exceptionally long-staple and lustrous. In combination with the silk, the wool provides structural depth while the silk delivers brilliance. The pile height is approximately 12 mm, and the hand-spun construction gives a particularly soft, plush hand.
Colour and Composition
The palette pairs a warm amber ground with a deep charcoal tiger and accent passages. The silk threads of the amber passages catch the light at shifting angles — in daylight the rug reads warmer and more saturated, in evening light the charcoal anchors the composition and gives the tiger its full presence. The silk-rich construction lends the surface a quiet glow that no all-wool tiger can match.
Quality Line — Djoharian Elegance (80 kpsi)
This piece is hand-knotted in our Elegance line — a step above the foundation Naturals quality, knotted at 80 kpsi (knots per square inch) in Changpai highland wool and silk. Finer drawing, more detail in the tiger's contour, and a more luminous surface than the entry-level production. Other Djoharian Tiger lines available on order: Naturals (60 kpsi), Luxury (100 kpsi), Executive (150 kpsi).
Presence in the Room
At 180 × 90 cm (1.6 m²) this is the classical Tibetan Khaden format. Three contexts in which this Tibetan Tiger reaches its full effect:
- Statement bedside or reading corner: The silk-rich pile catches the light beautifully — a piece that rewards being placed where it can be seen and touched in daily use.
- Hallway or entrance: As a small premium statement, the silk surface gives the amber and charcoal palette an extraordinary depth that no all-wool tiger can match.
- Studio or meditation space: The luminous tiger motif and the plush silk-wool blend make this the natural choice for a personal sanctuary, meditation cushion accompaniment or contemplative workspace.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cultural significance of the tiger motif in Tibet?
Tiger rugs are among the oldest motifs in Himalayan textile culture. For centuries they served in Tibetan monasteries and palaces as seats for high lamas during meditation, as covers for ceremonial columns, and as honour places for rulers and teachers. The tiger itself symbolises power, protective strength and spiritual vigilance — the embodiment of the awakened mind in Vajrayana Buddhism.
What does the Elegance quality line mean?
Elegance is one step above the foundation Naturals quality, hand-knotted at 80 kpsi in Changpai highland wool and silk. The higher knot count allows finer drawing and more detail in the tiger's contour, and the silk-rich blend gives a more luminous surface. The same design is available to order in Naturals (60 kpsi), Luxury (100 kpsi) and Executive (150 kpsi).
How do I care for a silk-rich rug?
Regular vacuuming at reduced power preserves the pile and silk lustre — without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. On smooth floors we recommend an anti-slip underlay. For thorough cleaning, only professional hand washing by a workshop experienced with silk constructions — no dry cleaning. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight over the years, as silk can lose colour intensity over time. Blot spills immediately with cold water and a light cotton cloth, never rub.
