An antique American Sarouk runner — the classic floral-spray design on a deep red field, hand-knotted in wool, returned from the United States with its full, rich pile beautifully preserved.
The American Sarouk Tradition
Sarouk (Sarough) in the Arak region of west-central Persia is one of the great names of Persian weaving. In the 1920s and 1930s a distinctive variant was woven specifically for the American market — the “American Sarouk” — defined by detached, naturalistic floral sprays scattered in rows across a rich red field, rather than a central medallion. These rugs furnished fine American homes for generations. This runner is a genuine US re-import: a piece that crossed the Atlantic decades ago and now returns to Europe, carrying the patina of its history while retaining a remarkably full pile.
Condition and Character
This is a genuinely antique piece in excellent, full-pile condition — the wool stands high and even across the field, with none of the wear often seen in rugs of this age. It has been professionally inspected and washed in our atelier and is ready for daily use. A collector’s runner that combines real age with the practicality of a well-preserved surface.
Colour and Composition
A deep brick-red field carries the signature Sarouk floral sprays — roses, palmettes and leafy stems — drawn in navy, ivory, light blue, gold-camel, salmon and teal-green, arranged in the calm vertical rhythm of the American Sarouk style. A deep navy main border of flowering vine frames the field, flanked by narrow ivory and camel guard borders. Ivory wool fringes finish the ends.
