A hand-knotted Azilal Berber from the High Atlas mountains of Morocco — a soft cream wool ground scattered with playful tribal motifs in pink, blue, green and violet.
The Azilal Berber Tradition
Azilal rugs are woven by Berber women in the province of the same name in the High Atlas mountains of central Morocco. Unlike the minimalist, monochrome Beni Ourain, Azilal rugs are colourful and free-spirited — a natural undyed wool ground brought to life with spontaneous, improvised motifs in bright dyes. Each piece is unique, a personal visual diary of its weaver. This is a new piece, hand-knotted in the traditional manner with a thick, soft pile.
Colour and Composition
A soft cream-white wool ground carries a lively array of tribal motifs: two pink-filled lozenge medallions down the centre, framed in blue, green and violet outlines, with scattered diamonds, arrows and hooks throughout. Two vertical “tree-of-life” stems run up the sides in black with pink, green and blue leaf motifs, and a pink line closes the field at the foot. The colours — magenta-pink, blue, green, violet and black — sit vividly against the natural wool. Black-and-white selvedge bands and cream wool fringes finish the ends.

At 230 × 145 cm (3.34 m²) this is a versatile medium format. Three contexts in which the Azilal reaches its full effect:
