Beni Ourain Mrirt Berber Rug — Hand-Knotted Wool in Wool White and Charcoal
Hand-knotted by women of the Beni Ourain Mrirt tribe in the Moroccan Middle Atlas — fine highland wool, a wool-white field crossed by a modern grid of charcoal lines.
Provenance and Tribal Heritage
Beni Ourain rugs are hand-knotted by women of the Beni Ourain tribe in the villages of the Moroccan Middle Atlas. The Mrirt variant is the finest expression of this tradition — woven in glossy, premium highland wool with the characteristic wool-white ground that has made Beni Ourain rugs a staple of modern interior design since the mid-twentieth century.
This piece carries the tradition into a contemporary register: instead of the classical lozenge pattern, the wool-white field is crossed by a free grid of charcoal lines that divide the surface into irregular blocks — a graphic, almost architectural composition. The drawing is still placed freely by the weaver, in the Mrirt manner, but the vocabulary is modern. Each piece is unique.
Presence in the Room
At 150 × 100 cm (1.5 m², approx. 3 × 5 ft) this is a small accent format. Three contexts in which the Mrirt reaches its full effect:
- Entryway or bedside: A welcoming wool-white accent at the door or beside the bed, with the charcoal grid offering a quiet visual anchor.
- Reading nook: Under a single armchair and floor lamp, where the soft pile invites bare feet and the lines can be read up close.
- Layering accent: On top of a larger neutral base in a boho-modern living room, adding texture and graphic character without overwhelming the composition.
