Qum Qom silk rugs
Qum / Silk Rugs QUM rugs - unique items from the Djoharian Collection.Qum Rugs and Carpets - What is a Qum rug?Rugs with the name Qum or Qom, or Ghom usually come from the town of the same name in central Iran. What are the qualities of Qum rugs?Rugs from Qum are available in many variations, both in terms of pattern and quality. The knot density of the hand-knotted rugs starts at around 200 knots per inch² for simple pieces and reaches up to 1250 knots per inch² for rarely fine work. The motifs are usually floral or patterned with a medallion, hunting scenes, tree of life or all over..How much do Qum rugs cost?A simple wool rug with a low knot density costs less than 400 USD in the size 5 x 3 ft, a rarely fine piece in silk from a famous workshop can well cost over 20.000 USD in the same size. The knotting density, the amount of work and the material used are decisive.
Rugs from Qum are among the most popular Persian carpets. The reasons for this are simple: high-quality craftsmanship, fine knotting, fine materials and elaborate designs gives Qum carpets the exclusive touch.
The art of knotting is realtively new in Qum, started about 1930. After 1950 Qum has become the most important production location for exquisite silk rugs.
Qom (also Qum, Ghom) is a city in central Iran, about 130 km south of the capital Tehran. The city is known as the seat of Islamic theological college and a place of pilgrimage. The sister of the eighth Imam (Ali ibn Musa ar-Rida / Imam Reza), Fatima bint Musa, died in 817 in Qum and was buried there. The graves impressive golden dome was built in 1600, which is one of the landmarks of Qom. Qom is no city with very old weaving tradition. In the 1930`er carpet producers from nearby city of Kashan began establishing a production in Qom. Due to the increased global demand for Persian rugs, existing weaving centers could no longer produce enough. Consequently, therefore, new production facilities have been established. To date, design elements from Kashan are found, especially in the border or in the way that certain flowers are tied. But anyway carpets from Qum today have a distinctive appearance. Typical is a lush floral design, often created in medallion design. Most carpets are knotted in the formats 2 x 3 ft, 4 x 3 ft, 5 xx 3 ft, 7 x 5 ft and runners and gallery size. Carpet made of silk and often high-priced. Designs: Floral, usually with a medallion. Very detailed work. Likewise, common patterns are prayer rugs with a dome and arborvitae, hunting motifs, Figural carpets and pictures.

Sarouk, Mahal, Sultanabad rugs

Many of the remaining antique pieces were made for the US market and are called "American Sarouk". They have a soft color palette from rose to brown and a eye catching indigo blue in their borders. The wool used is very find and of excellent quality. Well known for their quality are rugs from Farahan, Mahal, Sultanabad, Jozan and Mohajeran.
