Djoharian Collection · Hereke Manufactory
Vintage Hereke Palatial
500 × 330 cm · Ivory & Salmon Medallion
Hereke Manufactory, founded 1843, Ottoman court tradition.
Provenance and Imperial Heritage
Hereke, on the eastern shore of the Sea of Marmara, has been a byword for sovereign-grade knotting since Sultan Abdülmecid I founded the Imperial Ottoman manufactory there in 1843. Originally established to supply the palaces of the Ottoman court, the Hereke workshops developed a standard of fineness that has remained the international benchmark for Turkish rug production. The manufactory tradition was strictly controlled, the materials reserved for the highest tier, and the workshops continued under Republican patronage after 1923. A Hereke piece is, by tradition, a court-quality textile.
This palatial piece was hand-knotted in Hereke, Turkey, between approximately 1990 and 2000, from fine wool with a distinct silky sheen on a cotton foundation. The wool used in Hereke production is among the most refined fibres in the Turkish canon — tear-resistant, lustrous, and capable of carrying the dense knot counts the manufactory is known for. The composition follows the classical Hereke vocabulary: a central medallion anchors the field, framed by intricate floral filigree inherited from the Ottoman court manufactories.
Colour and Composition
The rug is built on a luminous ivory field filled with dense floral filigree, anchored by a radiant salmon-and-coral sun medallion with a deep navy star at its core. A camel-gold main border with palmettes frames the composition, set off by turquoise guard stripes that run through the field and inner borders as a cooling accent. The full palette pairs ivory, salmon and camel-gold with turquoise, navy, soft green and warm brown. The structure is unmistakably Hereke; the medallion carries its classical authority while the warm, light register places the rug naturally in stately interiors, generous living rooms, dining halls and executive boardrooms.
Presence in the Room
At 500 × 330 cm (10.8 × 16.4 ft), 16.5 m² this is a true palatial-format piece. Three contexts in which the Hereke reaches its full effect:
- Stately living room: anchoring a full sofa group with armchairs and side tables, the central medallion provides a clear architectural focus while the ivory ground keeps a generously scaled room light and open.
- Formal dining room: under a long table for eight to twelve, the floral filigree reads as a measured architectural pattern from above — court tradition translated into daily presence.
- Boardroom or executive office: the Hereke name carries an unmistakable signal of provenance and quality — a piece that signals craftsmanship and historical depth without ostentation.
