Vintage Samsun Turkish Azeri Rug
344 × 278 cm · Indigo Blue, Rust & Ivory
Finest hand-spun Turkish wool in a deep indigo-blue field — a piece from one of the great Turkish weaving programmes of the late twentieth century.
Provenance and Knotting Tradition
The Samsun Collection represents a golden era of Turkish carpet weaving in the late 1990s, named after the Black Sea city of Samsun. These rugs are regarded as among the finest produced in Turkey in the late twentieth century, celebrated for their luminous lustre, dense construction and dignified colour palette.
This piece draws on the Azeri design tradition within the broader Sarouk-Mahal family of Persian floral designs that travelled westward in the nineteenth century and were reinterpreted across the Turkish and Caucasian weaving regions. It was hand-knotted in finest hand-spun Turkish wool on a wool foundation with the Turkish (Ghiordes) knot, dyed with mineral and vegetable pigments for a depth that only matures with age.
Colour and Composition
The piece is built around a deep, gently abrashed indigo-blue field — a confident, saturated ground that is unusual and highly collectible in this design family. A small ivory-and-rust central medallion floats at the centre, surrounded by an open scatter of floral sprays and curling vines in rust-red, terracotta, navy, ivory and soft sage. The composition is framed by a broad ivory main border carrying a striking flowering-tree and serrated-leaf motif, set between rust-red guard stripes. The blue ground keeps the whole piece calm and architectural while the warm florals give it life.
Presence in the Room
At 344 × 278 cm (9.6 m²) this is an extra-large room-size piece. Three contexts in which the Samsun reaches its full effect:
- Spacious living room: anchoring a generous sofa group, the indigo-and-rust palette adds warmth and craft to interiors with natural materials — wood, leather, linen.
- Grand dining hall: under a long table for eight to ten, the central medallion reads as an architectural element from above; the dense pile keeps chairs elegantly on the rug.
- Executive office or reception room: the legendary durability of Samsun construction makes the rug a confident choice for high-traffic, high-spec environments.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Samsun Collection?
Samsun is a city on the Turkish Black Sea coast that gave its name to a celebrated weaving programme of the late 1990s. Samsun rugs are known for finest hand-spun wool, dense knotting and a dignified, naturally-dyed palette — widely regarded as among the best Turkish production of that era. They reinterpret classical Persian designs (here the Azeri / Sarouk-Mahal idiom) in robust, long-lasting Turkish construction.
Is the blue field unusual?
Yes. Sarouk-Mahal and Azeri floral designs most often appear on red or ivory grounds; a deep, saturated indigo-blue field like this one is comparatively rare and especially sought after, since the blue gives the warm florals a calm, almost architectural setting. The gentle abrash (tonal shift) across the blue is a hallmark of hand-spun, naturally-dyed wool.
How do I care for a vintage hand-knotted wool rug?
Regular vacuuming without a beater bar is the basic care — vacuum in the direction of the pile. On smooth floors we recommend an anti-slip underlay. Blot spills immediately with cold water and a light cotton cloth, never rub. For a piece of this size we recommend professional hand washing every few years. Hand-spun, naturally-dyed wool is naturally resilient and ages beautifully.
