Vintage Zemmour Moroccan Berber Rug
202 × 102 cm · Deep Red, Saffron & Ivory
A deep-red field organised into rows of changing tribal symbols, hand-knotted in wool by Zemmour Berber weavers of the Middle Atlas — a graphic vintage village piece.
Provenance and Tribal Heritage
The Zemmour are a Berber tribal confederation of the Middle Atlas mountains in Morocco, traditionally settled between Meknes and Rabat. Zemmour weavers have produced rugs for generations in a distinctive idiom — saturated red grounds, bold graphic symbols and disciplined linear borders — one of the most architecturally readable of the Moroccan Berber design families, particularly valued by contemporary interior designers.
This piece was hand-knotted by Zemmour Berber weavers in the Middle Atlas region of Morocco around the 1980s, from highland wool on a wool foundation, in a full knotted pile (not a flatweave). It is a genuine collector's village piece in very good vintage condition.
Colour and Composition
The composition is a sampler-style field on a deep red ground, divided by fine latticed dividing lines into a grid of compartments. Each horizontal row carries a different geometric tribal symbol — eight-pointed stars, diagonal crosses, lozenges and diamonds, “H” glyphs, stylised scorpion and plant forms, triangle-and-pennant shapes, small stepped diamonds and crosses. The field is framed by a running triangle (saw-tooth) border of saffron, ivory and black pennants on red. The palette pairs the deep red ground with saffron-orange, ivory, soft pink and black, with touches of mustard — the graphic Zemmour vocabulary in confident village colour.
Presence in the Room
At 202 × 102 cm (2.1 m²) this is a focused small-format piece. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- Modern living room: The graphic red field pairs particularly well with mid-century furniture, raw wood and natural materials.
- Hallway or entrance: The elongated format and bold symbol vocabulary welcome visitors with clear, confident craft.
- Bedroom accent: Beside or at the foot of a bed in a room with warm lighting, the saturated red becomes a quiet, structural focal point.
