Caucasian Kazak Shirvan Rug
309 × 248 cm · Vanilla, Beige & Blue
The bold geometric vocabulary of the Caucasus, hand-knotted in hand-spun highland wool — in a quiet three-colour palette.
Provenance and Design Heritage
The Caucasian Kazak Shirvan design family comes from the mountainous Caucasus region between the Caspian and the Black Sea — the historic weaving belt of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and southern Russia. Since the 18th century, village weavers there have produced rugs of bold geometric clarity, with stepped medallions, hooked motifs and stylised star-flowers carried in strong colour. Antique Caucasian pieces are highly sought after by collectors; today the same design tradition is continued in fine workshop production in Afghanistan, where master weavers preserve the geometric vocabulary in hand-spun highland wool.
This piece was hand-knotted in Afghanistan from 100% hand-spun highland virgin wool on a cotton foundation. The composition follows the Kazak Shirvan vocabulary in a notably restrained three-colour palette — vanilla, beige and blue — with a central stepped medallion, large eight-point star-flowers and small tribal motifs spread evenly across the field. The quieter palette gives this piece a more contemporary, architectural reading than its more saturated siblings; the hand-spun wool gives the surface its characteristic depth and natural lustre.
Colour and Composition
Against a soft, slightly abrashed vanilla-to-sand beige ground, the design is drawn almost entirely in muted blues — navy, slate and a soft sky tone. A long central stepped medallion anchors the field, flanked by large hooked star-flowers and a scatter of small Caucasian fillers — stars, rosettes and cruciform leaf motifs. Multiple borders frame the field with a running rosette-and-star band. The washed, low-contrast three-colour palette is what gives the rug its calm, modern presence.
Presence in the Room
At 309 × 248 cm (7.7 m²) this is a generous large room-size piece. Three contexts in which the Kazak reaches its full effect:
- Modern living room: anchoring a sofa group of three to four pieces, the quiet vanilla-blue palette adds craftsmanship without competing with contemporary furniture in linen, oak or pale leather.
- Dining room: under a table for six to eight people, the geometric field reads as a measured architectural pattern from above.
- Library or study: in a room of books and quiet panelling, the restrained Kazak idiom acts as a calm, structured anchor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this an antique Caucasian rug?
No — this is a contemporary, new piece. It carries the classical Caucasian Kazak Shirvan design vocabulary (stepped medallions, hooked star-flowers, geometric borders), but it was hand-knotted recently in Afghanistan by master weavers who continue that village tradition. It offers the look and craftsmanship of an antique Caucasian rug in a fresh, unused condition.
What does “hand-spun highland wool” mean?
The wool is spun by hand rather than by machine, from highland sheep whose fleece is naturally rich in lanolin. Hand-spinning leaves slight, natural variations in the yarn, which take dye unevenly in the best possible way — producing the soft abrash (tonal shift) and natural lustre you see across the field. It is more labour-intensive than machine-spun wool and is one of the marks of a quality hand-knotted rug.
How do I care for a hand-knotted wool rug?
Regular vacuuming without a beater bar is the basic care — vacuum in the direction of the pile. On smooth floors we recommend an anti-slip underlay. Blot spills immediately with cold water and a light cotton cloth, never rub. For thorough cleaning we recommend professional hand washing every few years, depending on use. Hand-spun wool is naturally dirt-repellent and resilient.
