Arijana Afghan Kilim Runner
380 × 70 cm · Chevron Multicolour
A hand-woven tribal flatweave runner in a flowing chevron rhythm — hand-spun, plant-dyed highland wool from Afghan workshops near the Pakistani border.
The Arijana Tribal Line
Arijana kilims are hand-woven in the workshops of southern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border — a region with a long tradition of tribal flatweave. The Arijana idiom reinterprets the historic tribal designs of the area in highland wool, with colour pigments drawn entirely from natural plant dyes. The wool is hand-spun, the structure is a pure flatweave with fringes at both ends, and every piece carries the slight irregularities that mark genuine hand-woven work.
The line is known for its durability and timeless visual register — the geometric tribal vocabulary works equally well in modern interiors, in youthful loft settings, and as a layered foundation in more upscale rooms.
Colour and Design
This runner carries a continuous chevron zigzag running the full length of the piece — stacked horizontal bands of serrated peaks, a vocabulary rooted in the historic flatweave language of the region. The palette combines mustard-gold, turquoise, indigo blue, rust-brown, olive green and cream, all drawn from natural plant pigments, with each zigzag finely shaded so the colour shifts softly along its length. The result is a quiet, lived-in chromatic register rather than the flat bright tones of synthetic dyes.
Presence in the Room
At 380 × 70 cm (2.7 m²) this is a long, narrow runner format. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- Long hallway: The flatweave construction handles high foot traffic well, and the chevron rhythm reads beautifully when walked along.
- Staircase or gallery corridor: The narrow proportion and ultra-thin flatweave profile lie flat without bulk, ideal for transitional spaces.
- Kitchen runner or in front of a long sideboard: A textile anchor for a linear architectural feature, with hand-spun wool that handles light spills better than machine-made flatweaves.
