Vintage Azilal Moroccan Berber Rug
235 × 155 cm · Multicolour Diamond Field
A dense multicolour diamond lattice broken by a single off-set chequerboard band — a freely improvised, one-of-a-kind Azilal hand-knotted in the Moroccan High Atlas.
Provenance and Tribal Heritage
Azilal rugs are hand-knotted by Berber women in the village workshops of the High Atlas Mountains, north-east of Marrakesh. The Azilal idiom is defined by free, often asymmetric geometry on a colourful ground — diamond fields, irregular grids and isolated symbols — worked in highland wool. Because the looms stand in family houses, each rug is composed freely from memory, and no two are ever alike.
This is a vintage piece from around the 1970s in very good condition, with the soft patina of decades of use. It is a genuine collector's piece — the kind of freely composed Azilal that rewards close looking.
Colour and Composition
The field is a dense all-over lattice of small diamonds, each outlined in dark wool and filled individually in a different colour — red, royal blue, gold-yellow, green-turquoise, ivory and aubergine — so that the whole surface shimmers like coloured glass. What makes this piece genuinely rare is its deliberate irregularity: across the upper third, the diamond grid is interrupted by a horizontal multicolour chequerboard band, off-set and slightly bowed, where the weaver broke her own pattern and improvised freely. The side borders are dark aubergine-brown, unevenly wide — broader on one side than the other — a hand-woven asymmetry that is part of the rug's character, and an inner turquoise zigzag line frames the field. Narrow striped kilim ends close the rug top and bottom. The palette runs across red, royal blue, gold-yellow, green and turquoise, ivory, aubergine and orange.
Presence in the Room
At 235 × 155 cm (3.6 m²) this is a generous medium-format piece. Three contexts in which the Azilal reaches its full effect:
- Boho living room: In front of a sofa or layered over a larger neutral base, the colourful tribal field brings warmth and texture into a modern interior.
- Bedroom anchor: Alongside or at the foot of the bed, the soft wool pile makes a comfortable first step in the morning.
- Reading corner or study: Anchoring a chair-and-lamp arrangement, where the free geometry and the chequerboard break can be read up close.
