Palatial Khotan Design Rug — Tibetan Wool & Silk, Hand-Knotted in Nepal
Hand-knotted in Nepal in Tibetan highland wool and silk — a Djoharian interpretation of the Khotan tradition, made to order for long dining tables.
The Khotan Tradition, Reinterpreted
This palatial rug is a contemporary Djoharian interpretation of one of the great classics of the Silk Road — the geometric, luminous carpets that once travelled from Khotan in Eastern Turkestan to the courts of Asia and Europe. Historic Khotan rugs were woven in the oasis towns of the Tarim Basin from the 17th century onward, with geometric medallions, pomegranate fields, lattice grounds, and a colour language that blended Persian, Chinese, and Central Asian influences.
Our master weavers in Nepal have studied these antique pieces in detail and reinterpret them for contemporary architecture — not as copies but as designs in conversation with their sources. The drawing here pairs a round central medallion and corner ornaments with a wide, multi-tiered border of key-band (T-meander) running-key, flower-rosettes and cloud-band volutes — the unmistakable Khotan vocabulary — in ivory, silver-grey, beige and a quiet blue accent, a palette designed to anchor a room rather than dominate it.
Material & Construction
The pile is a deliberate blend of two-thirds Tibetan highland wool and one-third real silk. Tibetan wool is harvested from sheep that live at altitude — the fibres are longer, richer in lanolin, with a natural sheen and remarkable resilience, which is why high-end Nepal-knotted rugs almost universally use it. The silk component lifts the design, catches light differently than wool, and gives the surface its characteristic shimmer when seen from changing angles.
Hand-knotted at approximately 100 kpsi (~155,000 knots per m²), on a cotton warp and weft, with an 8–10 mm pile.
Presence in the Room
At 550 × 260 cm (14.3 m², approx. 18 × 8.5 ft) this is a true palatial format. Three contexts in which the rug reaches its full effect:
- Long dining table: the ideal proportion for seating of ten to fourteen — generous enough that chairs stay on the rug when drawn back, narrow enough not to crowd a passage.
- Long living space, entrance hall, or gallery corridor: works as a runner-format anchor in architectural rooms.
- Stately interiors: the soft ivory-grey-blue palette sits comfortably with pale oak, brushed steel, cream linen, and natural stone — the visual register of contemporary high-end interiors.
Bespoke — Made to Your Architecture
This rug is part of our made-to-order Djoharian Collection. Every aspect can be adapted to your project:
- Size: 550 × 260 cm shown — any other format on request, ideal for long dining tables and architectural rooms
- Colour palette: the ivory–grey–beige–blue scheme is one of many; we can adjust to your interior, your samples, or your architect's specification
- Material mix: the wool-to-silk ratio can shift toward more silk (more shimmer, softer hand) or more wool (more matte, more robust)
- Design density: the medallion, border, and field can be redrawn at different scales
- Production time: typically 4–6 months from order confirmation
