Abadeh Rug — Tribal Diamond Medallion
100 × 155 cm
An Abadeh from the Fars highlands — an ivory field scattered with tribal animals and blossoms around a stepped diamond medallion, framed in brick red.
Abadeh — Tribal Art of the Fars Highlands
The town of Abadeh lies on the road between Shiraz and Isfahan, in the highland province of Fars. Its weavers took the spirited geometric vocabulary of the surrounding Qashqai nomads and gave it a more ordered, workshop-disciplined structure — the result is the unmistakable Abadeh: a tribal rug with the legibility of a town carpet. The classic Abadeh layout, woven here, is built around a stepped diamond medallion on an open ivory field, anchored at the four corners by dark Heybatlu motifs — a signature of the type.
This piece is hand-knotted in 100% highland wool on a stable cotton foundation, in the classical Abadeh manner. As a new rug, it arrives with its full pile, crisp drawing and bright, unfaded colour.
Colour and Composition
A luminous ivory-cream field carries a stepped diamond medallion with a small petrol-green centre worked in red and cream. The field is densely scattered with the tribal vocabulary that makes the Abadeh so engaging to read up close: birds, roosters, animals and small human figures, along with blossoms, vases and geometric sprays in brick red, petrol green, light blue, mustard-gold, brown, black and salmon. The four corners and the spandrels are worked in warm brick red / terracotta, each anchored by a dark Heybatlu cross-medallion. An ivory main border carries a floral vine in red, petrol and brown, set off by indigo guard stripes. The palette is full and lively — the brightness of a new piece, not the muted tone of an aged one.
Presence in the Room
At 100 × 155 cm (1.55 m²) this is a focused small format — a piece for considered placement and close looking. Three contexts in which the Abadeh reaches its full effect:
- Study or reading nook: Beside a desk or under a single armchair, the densely figured field rewards quiet, repeated looking.
- Entrance or hallway: As a piece on the way into the home, the tribal drawing signals warmth and craftsmanship.
- Bedroom accent: Beside the bed or at its foot, the ivory ground keeps the room light while the scattered motifs add character.
