Caucasian Kazak Shirvan Rug
245 × 299 cm · Five-Colour Tribal Palette
The bold geometric vocabulary of the Caucasus, hand-knotted in hand-spun highland wool — a tribal piece in a luminous five-colour palette of vanilla, beige, turquoise, red and blue.
Provenance and Design Heritage
The Caucasian Kazak Shirvan design family comes from the mountainous Caucasus region between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea — the historic weaving belt of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and southern Russia. Since the 18th century, village weavers have produced rugs of bold geometric clarity, with stepped medallions, hooked motifs and stylised figures carried in strong, saturated colour. Antique Caucasian pieces are highly sought after by collectors; today the same design tradition is continued in fine workshop production in Afghanistan, where master weavers preserve the geometric vocabulary in hand-spun highland wool.
This piece was hand-knotted in Afghanistan from 100% hand-spun highland virgin wool on a cotton foundation. The composition follows the Kazak Shirvan vocabulary in a notably luminous five-colour palette — vanilla, beige, turquoise, red and blue — with stepped geometric medallions and small tribal motifs spread evenly across the field. The hand-spun wool gives the surface its characteristic depth and natural lustre.
Colour and Composition
The luminous five-colour palette — vanilla, beige, turquoise, red and blue — is what sets this piece apart from the typical rust-and-navy Caucasian rug. Stepped geometric medallions run down the centre of the field, framed by small hooked motifs, stars and stylised tribal figures scattered evenly across an open ground, with multiple geometric borders enclosing the composition. The turquoise in particular gives the rug an unusually fresh, light character for a tribal Caucasian design. Because the field reads the same from every side, the rug is especially easy to place.
Presence in the Room
At 245 × 299 cm (7.3 m²) this is a generous large room-size piece. Three contexts in which the Kazak reaches its full effect:
- Living room: anchoring a sofa group of three to four pieces, the warm five-colour palette adds craftsmanship and character to interiors built around natural wood, leather and stone.
- Dining room: under a table for six to eight people, the geometric field reads as a clear architectural pattern from above.
- Library or study: in a room of books and quiet panelling, the bold tribal idiom acts as a warming counterpoint to muted walls.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this an antique Caucasian rug?
No — this is a contemporary, hand-knotted piece woven in Afghanistan in the Caucasian Kazak Shirvan tradition. Antique Caucasian rugs from the 18th and 19th centuries are rare collector items; this rug carries the same bold geometric design vocabulary and hand-spun wool construction in a new, fully usable piece, at a fraction of the cost of an antique.
What is a Kazak Shirvan design?
Kazak and Shirvan are two of the great Caucasian weaving traditions, known for stepped medallions, hooked motifs, stars and stylised tribal figures rendered in clear, saturated colour on an open field. The style is prized for its bold, almost graphic geometry — a tribal idiom that sits as easily in a modern interior as in a traditional one.
How do I care for a hand-spun wool rug?
Regular vacuuming without a beater bar is the basic care — vacuum in the direction of the pile. On smooth floors we recommend an anti-slip underlay. Blot spills immediately with cold water and a light cotton cloth, never rub. Hand-spun highland wool is naturally dirt-repellent and resilient; for a deeper clean every few years we recommend professional hand washing, a service we offer in our own atelier.
