Palatial Farahan Rug
865 × 422 cm · Blue-Grey, Beige & Ivory

A disciplined all-over Farahan field on a soft blue-grey ground, framed by an ivory palmette border — hand-knotted to order in Ghazni highland wool at ballroom scale.

The Farahan Tradition, Scaled for Architecture

The Farahan tradition of west-central Iran is among the most restrained vocabularies in classical Persian carpet design — stylised palmettes, botanical arabesques and quiet rhythm rather than dense ornament. Where classical Kashan or Tabriz aim for splendour, Farahan aims for poise. That restraint is exactly what makes the tradition right for very large architectural spaces: the rug holds the room without competing with it.

This is a new piece, hand-knotted to order by Djoharian Design in Afghanistan, a contemporary reinterpretation of the Farahan idiom at a scale most catalogues never address. At 865 × 422 cm (36.5 m²) it is the rare format at which a rug stops being an object in a room and becomes part of the architecture itself — an exclusive, collector-grade commission.

Colour and Composition

The composition is the classical Farahan all-over: a balanced, rhythmic field of stylised palmettes and curling botanical arabesques, with no dominating medallion — the elegance lies in the discipline of the repeat. At this scale the drawing reads as architecture from a distance and as fine detail when walked across. The field is framed by an ivory main border of bold palmette-and-vine scrolls, flanked by soft-blue guard stripes with a running floral motif. The palette is the deliberately calm Farahan register, reworked for contemporary interiors: a dominant soft blue-grey ground, with warm beige florals, deep blue and indigo accents, camel-taupe and sparing ivory and cream highlights — quiet enough to hold a vast room, rich enough never to read as bland.

Material and Make

The rug is hand-knotted in 100% hand-spun Ghazni highland wool on a cotton warp and weft — the fibre prized for its lanolin content, lustre and the way it ages. The Ghazni wool gives the piece a quiet sheen even under bright lighting and the resilience that a room of this scale demands. Construction is an even, full hand-knotted pile of medium-fine density.

Presence in the Room

At nearly 37 m² this is a carpet for rooms above 150 m². Three contexts in which a piece of this scale reaches its full effect:

  • Hotel lobby or ballroom: Under a chandelier in a five-star property — a foundation that signals the standard of everything else without raising its voice.
  • Grand residential hall: A double-height entrance or the main hall of a country estate, where the quiet palette lets architecture and art take centre stage.
  • Boardroom or private club: A conference floor or members' club lounge — instant gravitas, with no need for embellishment.

Excellent experience with the seller, Karl. He responded to all my questions. In addition to the photos on the website, he sent even more photos and a video of the rug, which is exactly as it appeared. The purchase was simple. Shipping was via UPS and the rug arrived one week later.

We were unsure which rug to choose, and wanted a rug that was in almost new condition. Karl was very honest about the conditions of the rug, even details/"defects" that we cannto necessarily see on a computer screen, In the end, our Tibetan rug came early which was perfect timing for our new home, and in the good condition just as Karl described. We absolutely love our new rug. Thank you.
