Vintage Ladik Turkish Rug
205 × 122 cm · Old Rose, Ivory & Olive
A finely drawn central medallion on a muted old-rose ground, hand-knotted in wool in the Anatolian town of Ladik — a soft, contemporary-reading vintage piece.
Provenance and Knotting Tradition
Ladik is a small town in the Konya province of central Anatolia, Turkey, with a weaving tradition reaching back at least to the seventeenth century. Ladik became one of the most collected names of the Anatolian market, prized for balanced drawing, fine knotting and confident colour. This piece carries that tradition in a softly muted, contemporary-reading register.
It was hand-knotted around the 1960s in highland wool on a cotton foundation, in the Turkish (Ghiordes) knot. Decades of gentle use have settled the colours into the quiet old-rose palette that interior designers actively seek today — a genuine collector's village piece in good vintage condition.
Colour and Composition
The composition is a central floral medallion on a soft old-rose (mauve) ground. An ivory-cream cartouche, drawn with finely feathered outlines, frames a rose inner field worked in a delicate diamond lattice (Herati-style) around a central flower rosette. The ivory corner spandrels repeat the fine lattice, separated from the field by scrolling vine lines. An ivory main border of linked blossoms and olive-and-brown vines frames the rug, flanked by narrow floral guard stripes. The palette is built on old rose and mauve with ivory, olive green, brown-red and soft terracotta accents — a quiet, harmonised register typical of a well-aged Anatolian piece.
Presence in the Room
At 205 × 122 cm (2.5 m²) this is a versatile small-to-medium piece. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- Bedroom or dressing area: The muted old-rose palette gives a warm, tactile foundation to a room of natural materials and soft lighting.
- Library or reading nook: The wool surface and quiet colour reward being close to daily life.
- Modern apartment with a soft palette: The vintage register pairs particularly well with contemporary interiors in neutrals, linen and oak.
