Melas Hallway Runner
78 × 273 cm · Rust, Apricot & Ivory
A chain of stepped medallions in rust and apricot down a slender runner, framed by an ivory leaf border — hand-knotted in wool in the Melas tradition of southwestern Anatolia.
Melas — Anatolian Weaving Tradition
The Melas (also Milas) tradition takes its name from the town of Milaş in southwestern Anatolia, on the Aegean coast of Turkey. The region's weavers have produced distinctive rugs for centuries, with a recognisable palette of warm rust-reds, apricot and soft ivory, and a confident geometric drawing of medallions and floral borders.
This is a new, unused piece, hand-knotted from highland wool on a wool foundation in the Turkish (Ghiordes) knot. It carries the Melas vocabulary in fresh, clear colour — a hard-wearing runner built for daily life.
Colour and Composition
A central chain of stepped hexagonal medallions runs the length of the piece, alternating between rust-red and apricot grounds, each medallion filled with stylised blossoms, small cruciform flowers and diamond stars. The field is framed by an ivory main border of diagonally running leaf-and-vine motifs, flanked by narrow dove-blue and rust guard stripes, with floral sprays in the corner spandrels. The palette runs across rust-red, apricot-salmon, ivory, dove blue, mustard-gold with touches of soft green and dark brown — the warm, characteristic Melas register.
Presence in the Room
At 78 × 273 cm (2.1 m²) this is a classic hallway runner format. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- Hallway or corridor: The traditional runner format guides foot traffic on durable hand-knotted wool, the warm palette enlivening a transitional space.
- Staircase: The elongated proportions suit a stair-runner installation, the dense wool surface absorbing sound and adding tactile warmth.
- Beside a long sofa or kitchen island: As a runner-format accent rather than a primary anchor.
