Vintage Tabriz · Muted Allover Floral
Vintage Tabriz Rug
13 × 9 ft · 400 × 276 cm
A large vintage Tabriz rug — muted camel, ivory and soft blue in an allover floral field, worn to perfection.
A Generous Vintage Tabriz for Open-Plan Rooms
Tabriz is one of the most enduring workshop cities of the Persian rug tradition. By the mid-twentieth century, alongside the city's fine atelier production, a parallel body of more workmanlike pieces emerged — generous formats, wool pile, classical compositions worked at a relaxed knot density. This is one such piece: a genuine vintage rug of approximately 60 to 80 years of age. Decades of use, careful washing and the natural fading of vegetable dyes have settled it into the soft, muted palette that contemporary interiors find easier to live with than a brand-new, fully saturated rug.
Colour and Composition
The composition is a classical Tabriz allover floral design — a continuous field of fine scrolling vinework, palmettes and blossoms, with no central medallion, framed by a measured floral border. The palette is read through a muted register of warm camel and taupe-brown, with the floral drawing carried largely in ivory and cream and quiet accents of soft, dusted blue running through the blossoms. The pile has been worn and washed to the point where the design reads as a quiet, harmonious surface rather than a graphic statement — “worn to perfection” is the trade term for this state.
Toward the lower end the rug shows a gentle abrash — a natural horizontal shift in the ground tone where a new batch of hand-dyed wool was introduced on the loom — running through a secondary border band. Far from a flaw, abrash is a hallmark of authentic hand-knotted, naturally dyed work, and gives the piece its individual, living surface.
Placement
At 400 × 276 cm the piece is generously sized — it anchors a large living room with full seating group, fits a substantial dining table with chairs pulled back, or works as a continuous floor in an open-plan space. Wool pile is durable for everyday use. Use a non-slip pad on smooth flooring; suitable above underfloor heating. A muted vintage Tabriz works particularly well in rooms with strong architectural lines or contemporary furniture, where its softness balances harder elements.
