Tibetan Tiger Rug
180 × 90 cm · Pink & Silver Silk · Khaden Format
Hand-knotted in Kathmandu in 50% silk and 50% Changpai highland wool, an abstract tiger-stripe design in silver silk on a soft pink ground, in the traditional Khaden format.
Heritage and Knotting Tradition
The tiger rug is one of the oldest motifs in Himalayan textile culture. In the Tibetan tradition the tiger stands for power, protective strength and spiritual vigilance, and tiger rugs were used in monasteries and palaces as honoured seats and ceremonial pieces. This rug carries the motif in its abstract form — a rhythmic field of tiger stripes rather than a figural animal, the pelt pattern reduced to flowing chevron bands that run the length of the piece.
It is hand-knotted in the workshops of Kathmandu, Nepal, by experienced artisans in the Tibetan knotting tradition. The material composition is 50% silk and 50% hand-spun Changpai highland wool. Changpai, from sheep raised above 4,000 metres on the Tibetan plateau, is exceptionally long-staple and lustrous. The wool gives the rug its structural body and resilience; the silk delivers brilliance and the characteristic shimmer of Himalayan production. The pile height is approximately 12 mm, and the hand-spun construction gives a particularly soft, plush hand.
Colour and Composition
The palette is built around a soft pink ground crossed by silver silk stripes. The stripes are knotted in genuine silk, so they catch the light quite differently from the wool ground around them: in daylight the silver passages read bright and reflective, in evening light they soften and the pink deepens. The result is a piece that genuinely shifts with the time of day — the silk lines almost lifting off the matte pink field.
Presence in the Room
At 180 × 90 cm (1.6 m²) this is the classical Tibetan Khaden format. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- Statement bedroom piece: beside or in front of the bed — the pink-and-silver palette and the silk shimmer make this a natural choice for a bedroom where colour and texture are part of the design language.
- Boudoir, dressing room or reading corner: the silk stripes and the warm pink make the rug particularly effective in intimate, well-lit private spaces designed to be experienced up close.
- Wall piece or art object: the Khaden format and the luminous silk make this a viable wall hanging — a textile artwork that brings the Himalayan tradition into a contemporary interior.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the 50% silk, 50% wool blend mean for this rug?
The rug is knotted from equal parts silk and hand-spun Changpai highland wool. The wool gives structural body and resilience underfoot; the silk delivers the brilliance and shimmer that define the silver stripes. With the silk concentrated in the stripes, the pattern catches the light differently than the surrounding pink wool ground — so the rug visibly shifts between daylight and evening light.
Can this design be ordered in another size or colour?
Yes. This is a Djoharian Design made-to-order piece. The motif can be produced in any dimension, with the colour palette matched to your Pantone or RAL specification from over 1,200 yarn shades, and in higher knot densities on request. We supply a 30 × 30 cm reference sample for approval before full production; lead time is typically 4–6 months depending on size.
How do I care for a silk-blend rug?
Vacuum gently without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Use a non-slip underlay on smooth floors. Blot spills immediately with cold water and a light cotton cloth — do not rub. Because of the silk content, we recommend professional hand-washing for any deeper clean rather than home treatment. Kept out of prolonged direct sunlight, the colours stay saturated for decades.
