A Rare Striped Composition from Qum

Qum (Ghom) is best known for floral medallions and silk hunting compositions. Striped designs from this region are uncommon — they appear in semi-antique work from the mid-twentieth century, when individual ateliers occasionally departed from the dominant medallion repertoire and revisited older Persian banded compositions. This piece, knotted some fifty to seventy years ago, is one of those quieter Qum exceptions: a measured, longitudinal design rather than a central figure.

Wool with Silk Highlights

The pile is hand-knotted in wool, with silk drawn through as fine highlights — a technique that brings selective lustre into otherwise matte fields. The silk catches light along stripe edges and small motifs; the wool carries the body. The palette runs beige and warm brown, with a band of blue running through the composition. The combination reads as restrained, neither shiny nor flat — a vintage Qum that fits living rooms more easily than dedicated collector display.

Placement

At 207 × 130 cm the piece anchors a seating group in a small to medium living room, sits well in front of a sofa, or works in an entryway or hall. Wool pile means everyday foot traffic is unproblematic; the silk highlights tolerate the same use. Use a non-slip pad on smooth flooring; suitable above underfloor heating. The longitudinal striped composition reads best in a placement that lets the bands run with, rather than across, the main sightline.
