Azilal Moroccan Berber Rug — Hand-Knotted Multicolour Wool with Tribal Diamonds
Hand-knotted in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains on a cotton foundation, in the free, exuberantly colourful tribal idiom of Azilal village production.
Provenance and Tribal Heritage
Azilal rugs are hand-knotted by Berber women in the village workshops of the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, north-east of Marrakesh. The tribal Azilal idiom is defined by free, often asymmetric geometry — diamond medallions, irregular fields and isolated symbols — worked in highland wool with a fearless sense of colour. Unlike most Moroccan Berber rugs, Azilal is almost always woven on a cotton foundation, which gives the piece a slightly lighter handle and a more even back.
This is a true statement piece: a patchwork of colour-blocked fields — anthracite grey, olive green, ivory, orange and dusky rose — each carrying large concentric diamond medallions and scattered tribal lozenges. The borders run as vivid multicolour stripes, and the whole rug sings in pink, magenta, violet, mint green, turquoise, orange and gold against the wool grounds. Exuberant, modern and unmistakably boho.
Presence in the Room
At 225 × 135 cm (3.0 m², approx. 4.4 × 7.4 ft) this is a compact medium-format piece. Three contexts in which this Azilal reaches its full effect:
- Boho-maximalist living room: As the colour anchor in front of a neutral sofa — the rug carries the entire palette of the room on its own.
- Creative studio or child's room: The joyful colour and soft, fluffy wool pile make it as welcoming underfoot as it is to look at.
- Entrance or reading nook: A high-impact accent in a smaller space, where its patchwork field reads as a piece of textile art.
