An early 20th-century Kashan from central Iran — hand-knotted in fine wool with the classical floral medallion vocabulary and a visibly abrash-modulated ground.
Provenance and Knotting Tradition
Kashan, in central Iran, is one of the oldest and most renowned centres of Persian rug production. The city's knotting tradition reaches back to the Safavid era, and Kashan workshops have produced rugs of recognised refinement for centuries. The classical Kashan vocabulary — a central floral medallion with corner spandrels and a curling floral inner field — has remained one of the most architecturally readable and most valued of the Persian design families.
This piece was hand-knotted in Kashan, Iran, in the early 20th century, from 100% fine wool on a cotton foundation. The composition follows the classical Kashan vocabulary: a lobed central floral medallion in navy anchors the field, framed by navy corner spandrels of dense floral work and a navy main border of palmettes and scrolling vine.
Colour and Composition
The palette is built on a luminous salmon-coral ground carrying a clearly visible abrash — the soft horizontal banding of tone that arises from hand-spun, naturally dyed yarn and marks an authentic antique piece. Against this ground the medallion and borders are drawn in deep royal blue and navy, with floral detail in ivory, sage-green, light blue, rust-orange and red. Decades of life have mellowed the saturations into a balanced, lived-in register — a patina no contemporary production can replicate. Beige wool fringes finish the ends.

At 205 × 135 cm (2.8 m²) this is a compact room-size piece in the overlap between small and medium. Three contexts in which the antique Kashan reaches its full effect:
- Living room: Anchoring a compact seating group, the salmon-and-blue palette adds craft and tradition to interiors built around wood, leather and warm lighting.
