A grand vintage Kashan in palace format, hand-knotted in fine wool on a luminous red ground, its densely drawn floral field gathered around a finely articulated ivory-and-blue medallion.
Provenance and Manufactory Heritage
Hand-knotted in the celebrated weaving city of Kashan in central Iran, this is a finely drawn carpet in the classical Kashan tradition. Kashan is one of the great cradles of Persian weaving: from the Safavid era onward its royal manufactories produced carpets for the Shah and as state gifts to the courts of Europe, and the city's reputation rests on exceptionally fine wool and precise, drawing-led knotting.
This piece dates from the second quarter of the twentieth century and carries the classic central-medallion-and-floral-vine design (Shah Abbas tradition) for which Kashan is best known. It is worked in fine, lustrous wool on a stable cotton foundation, with small blossoms, leaf veins and slender tendrils drawn cleanly across a very large field.
Colour and Composition
The carpet glows on a luminous red ground. At its centre sits a finely drawn ivory-and-blue diamond medallion with pendants top and bottom, surrounded by a densely worked floral field of palmettes, rosettes and curling vine. A deep navy-blue main border of scrolling flowers frames the field, set off by light-blue guard borders.
The palette combines red and navy with light blue, rose-pink, ivory and brass-gold and small accents of green. Along the lower end the red ground shows a gentle abrash — a soft, natural variation in tone that occurs when hand-spun wool meets natural dyes, and a hallmark of an authentic hand-knotted carpet.
Presence in the Room
At 434 × 317 cm (13.8 m²) this is a true palace-format carpet for grand rooms. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- Grand living room or salon: the red ground brings warmth to a large room while anchoring full seating groups around the central medallion.
- Large dining room: under a long table, where the dense floral field keeps its effect even beneath the furniture.
- Reception room or stately hall: a decorative furnishing piece that brings depth, colour and a classical focal point to a large interior.
A Kashan of this size and quality is both a furnishing and a collector's piece, supplied with a certificate of authenticity and full provenance documentation.
