A Classic Medallion in Pure Silk
Qum (also Qom, Ghom) is the modern centre of Persian silk weaving — its ateliers emerged in the 20th century and quickly became the international benchmark for fine silk knotting. This small-format piece is hand-knotted entirely in mulberry silk, both pile and foundation. At roughly 800,000 knots per m², the density lets the curved lines of the central medallion and the dense floral vinework read sharply at close distance — detail no coarser construction can render. The pile is approximately 5 mm, low and tightly clipped in the Qum manner.
Colour and Composition
The composition is the classical Qum: a central ivory floral medallion with a coral-red rosette at its heart, set on a deep navy-blue field filled with dense floral vinework. Coral-orange corner spandrels frame the field, and a multi-band border encloses it: an ivory main border worked with a floral garland, with turquoise-green and navy guard stripes and fine pearl bands. The palette is warm and characterful: navy blue, ivory, coral-orange, turquoise, green, salmon-rose and gold-brown. As with all pure silk, the surface shifts with the light — daylight brings out the silk sheen, evening light deepens the navy ground.
Placement and Display
At 84 × 57 cm (0.5 m²) the format invites display rather than floor traffic. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- Wall hanging: Behind a console or in a reading corner, where the silk catches changing light — the use small Qum silks are most often put to.
- Centred on a low table: A jewel-like accent that rewards close looking.
- Desk or sideboard accent: A piece of this scale and quality reads as a quietly authoritative presence beside a writing surface.
