The Qashqai Weavers
The Qashqai are a confederation of nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes from the Zagros mountains around Shiraz in the Fars province of southwest Persia. They are among the most celebrated weavers of the tribal world, and their flatwoven kilims are prized for bold geometry, glowing natural wool colour and exceptionally tight, even weave. This piece is a finely woven example — crisp, flat and beautifully drawn.
Design and Technique
The kilim is hand-woven in the slit-weave flatweave technique — there is no pile; the pattern is built entirely from the interwoven weft. The field carries a dense diamond lattice, each diamond filled with stylised hooked and floral motifs in the classic Qashqai manner, arranged in glowing diagonal rows. A wide ivory border of stepped diamonds frames the field.
Colour and Composition
A warm rust-red field carries the diamond lattice in gold-saffron, light blue, navy, salmon and ivory. A broad ivory-sand main border of stepped diamonds runs in red, blue and gold, finished with a dark petrol outer edge. Wool fringes finish the ends. As a reversible flatweave, the kilim is light, supple and can be used on either face.
Presence in the Room
At 150 × 141 cm (2.12 m²) this is a near-square small format. Three contexts in which the kilim reaches its full effect:
- Living area: The bold lattice and warm palette make a lively focal point before a sofa or armchair, layered or on its own.
- Bedroom or reading nook: Light and supple underfoot, the near-square format suits a bedside or a cosy corner.
- On the wall: The crisp geometry and even weave make this kilim equally striking hung as a textile artwork.
