Arijana — Afghan Tribal Weaving
The Arijana kilims are hand-woven by Afghan workshops in the north and around Kandahar, in regions with a deep tribal weaving heritage. Each piece is flat-woven from hand-spun highland wool in natural vegetable dyes, in the geometric vocabulary that distinguishes Afghan tribal kilims from urban-workshop production. The result is a thin, reversible textile that lies close to the floor and rewards close looking from any angle.
This is a new, unused piece, woven to a generous large format. It is a genuine flatweave — no pile — in which the design is carried entirely by the warp and weft of the wool.
Colour and Composition
The composition is built on a bright ivory-cream ground carrying a central vertical chain of green-outlined hexagonal medallions down the long axis, each enclosing a multicolour star motif in red, gold, blue, violet or turquoise. Across the open ivory field, scattered hooked “ram's-horn” clusters and small snowflake-stars repeat in the same bright palette. The effect is cheerful and graphic: ivory and green structure the field while red, gold-mustard, blue, violet, turquoise and olive accents animate it — all natural dyes.
Presence in the Room
At 242 × 324 cm (7.84 m²) this is a large room-size flatweave. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- Open living room: Beneath a generous sofa configuration, the flatweave adds tactile warmth without bulk under furniture legs.
- Dining room for 8–10: Under an extending table, the medallion field reads clearly from above and keeps the room visually open.
- Loft and minimalist interior: Against concrete, oak and steel, the bright ivory ground and tribal colour become a lively counterpoint to architectural reduction.
