Djoharian Collection · Sherkat Farsh Workshop
Ghiasabad Sarouk Sherkat Farsh
4 × 5 ft · Rare Grey Field
Provenance and Workshop Heritage
The Sherkat Farsh workshops – the Iran Carpet Company – are the state-affiliated institutions that have set the benchmark for material, plant-based dyeing and master-knotting within the Iranian weaving tradition for decades. Within the Sarouk region, Ghiasabad is the top tier: a designation that signals not only careful drawing but, above all, the use of hand-spun, lanolin-rich highland wool. The high lanolin content gives the pile that soft, natural sheen so pronounced that it is regularly mistaken for silk.
This piece was hand-knotted in the Ghiasabad weaving region of the Sarouk district, central Iran, in the Sherkat Farsh tradition, from hand-spun wool on cotton warp and weft. The composition follows the classic Sarouk vocabulary: a delicate all-over floral pattern spread evenly across the field without a central medallion, framed by a slim, disciplined border.
Colour – A Genuine Rarity
The combination of a grey field with a biscuit border is a genuine rarity within the classic Sarouk school – the region is traditionally associated with deep madder reds and ivory grounds. The delicate medallion-free all-over floral pattern gives the piece a modern, airy character; the natural sheen of the Ghiasabad wool shifts the colours dynamically as the light moves across the surface – a textile that reads as living rather than fixed.
Presence in the Room
At 4 × 5 ft (155 × 112 cm), 1.7 m² this is a compact accent format – a piece for considered placement. Three contexts in which the Ghiasabad delivers its full effect:
- Reading nook or study: Beside a writing desk or beneath a single armchair, the all-over floral field rewards quiet, close looking; the silk-like sheen catches the light from every angle.
- Bedside or entry: The grey palette makes this Sarouk unusually contemporary – ideal for a personal space where craftsmanship should signal quietly.
- Wall hanging as textile art: The fine knotting and natural lustre qualify the piece for textile-art wall placement.
