Provenance and Knotting Tradition

Taspinar is a village in the Aksaray province of central Anatolia, Turkey, in the broader weaving district that has produced village rugs for centuries. Taspinar pieces are characterised by bold central medallions, strong colour confidence and the unmistakable directness of Anatolian village weaving. They sit in the tribal Turkish tradition rather than the urban workshop schools — a place where structural integrity and visual clarity matter more than fine knot counts.

This piece was hand-knotted by village weavers in Taspinar, Aksaray province, central Anatolia, Turkey, from 100% highland wool on a wool foundation — a robust wool-on-wool construction in the village tradition. The composition follows the classical Taspinar vocabulary: a bold stepped central medallion anchors a richly bordered field, with botanical sprays of carnations and tulips in the corners and a layered, multi-band border. Knotted in the 1970s–80s, the piece is in very good condition with its colour confidence fully intact.

Colour and Composition

The palette is built on a saturated vermilion-orange ground carrying a stepped ivory diamond medallion with floral interior. Deep navy blue frames the field and fills the corner spandrels with carnation sprays, while a broad camel-gold main border carries floral palmettes in red, orange, navy and ivory. Detail throughout in bordeaux-red, olive-green and ivory gives the village drawing its lively character. Beige wool fringes finish the ends.

At 360 × 223 cm (8.0 m²) this is a generous large room-size piece. Three contexts in which the vintage Taspinar reaches its full effect:

• Living room: Anchoring a sofa group of three to four pieces, the central medallion gives the room a clear visual centre and the saturated palette adds warmth.
• Stately dining room: Under a long table for six to eight, the medallion reads as a measured architectural anchor from above.
• Country house or stately interior: The Anatolian village idiom comes home to rooms with warm wood furniture and natural materials.
