Baluch rugs (also spelled Baluchi or Beluchi carpets) originate from the cross-border region of Baluchistan, an arid area spanning eastern Iran, western Afghanistan, and Pakistan. These authentic, hand-knotted tribal rugs are a testament to the rich cultural heritage and nomadic lifestyle of the Baluch people, an Iranic ethnic group known for their resilient spirit and distinctive weaving traditions.
The Origin Story
The Baluch people, traditionally nomadic or semi-nomadic, have a storied history of migration across the Iranian plateau. Their ancestral homeland is believed to be near the Caspian Sea region, from where they migrated south and east over centuries, eventually settling in the harsh, mountainous landscapes that define modern-day Baluchistan.
Historically woven by women on horizontal ground looms for personal use—as prayer mats, bedding, or storage bags—these rugs are infused with deep tribal symbolism and history. The designs reflect a fusion of influences from neighboring Turkmen, Kurdish, and Persian cultures, resulting in a truly unique aesthetic cherished by collectors worldwide.
