Vintage Persian Rug · Rose-Bidjar · The Djoharian Collection
Vintage Rose-Bidjar – Hand-Knotted Kurdish Wool with Gol-Farang Medallion, c. 1970s–1980s
The legendary „iron rug of Persia“ – a fine vintage Bidjar in the classical Rose (Gol-Farang) medallion, hand-knotted at approximately 400,000 knots per m².
Provenance and Knotting Tradition
Bidjar is a small town in the Kurdish region of northwestern Iran, and its rugs occupy a unique position in the Persian canon. Bidjars are known across the rug world as the „iron rug of Persia“ – hand-knotted at extreme density, beaten down so firmly while the wool is still wet that the resulting fabric is almost rigid. The exceptional structural integrity gives a Bidjar a working life measured in generations rather than years.
This piece was hand-knotted in the Bidjar region in the 1970s–1980s, with approximately 400,000 knots per m² (260 knots per inch²) – a fine quality that gives the floral drawing the precision it deserves. It is built from 100% lustrous wool on a stable cotton foundation. The composition follows the classical Rose-Bidjar / Gol-Farang pattern – a luminous ivory-beige field framed by a deep indigo border, with a central medallion radiating in rust red and delicate rose tones. The Gol-Farang („European flower“) motif entered the Bidjar repertoire in the 19th century and has graced European estates and collector interiors for generations.
Presence in the Room
At 113 × 76 cm (0.9 m²) this is a compact collector’s accent piece. Three contexts in which the Rose-Bidjar reaches its full effect:
- Entrance hall: As a welcoming accent rug, the Rose-Bidjar combines exceptional Bidjar durability with a refined floral idiom – the perfect piece for a representative entryway.
- Library or study: Beside a writing desk or as a bedside rug in a panelled space, the fine medallion rewards close looking as collector’s textile art.
- Wall hanging: Mounted as a small framed textile, the Rose-Bidjar functions as a piece of fine Persian art in a hallway, dressing area or boudoir.
