Vintage Kairouan Rug
297 × 195 cm · Beige, Caramel & Brown
Provenance and Kairouan Heritage
This vintage piece comes from Kairouan in central Tunisia. Kairouan emerged as the centre of Tunisian pile rug knotting in the late 19th century, when a state-supported workshop programme established the craft as a regional economic pillar. The city was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988, in part for this textile culture.
Kairouan rugs combine medallion structures with the warm earth-tone palette of the Maghreb. Unlike the geometrically austere Moroccan Berber traditions, Kairouan work is urban-arabic in character rather than tribal — the medallion is the central visual element, drawn within a finely composed border. The piece was hand-knotted in 100 % wool on a cotton foundation, a construction characteristic of Kairouan work that gives a firmer hand and sharper drawing than wool-on-wool Berbers.
Colour and Composition
A finely drawn border encloses a balanced medallion field in beige, caramel and warm brown — the warm earth-tone register that has held unbroken relevance in contemporary interiors. The wool is densely and evenly knotted, the pile quiet and inviting.
Presence in the Room
At 297 × 195 cm (6.4 × 9.7 ft), 5.8 m² this is a medium room-size piece. Three contexts in which the Kairouan reaches its full effect:
- Living room with medium seating group: the medallion and warm palette anchor a sofa with armchairs and a coffee table.
- Intimate dining room: under a table up to approx. 160 cm, the field reads as quiet architectural anchor.
- Open-plan loft or gallery: warm earth tones harmonise with wood furniture, lime plaster, natural stone, and muted wall colours.
