Vintage Kashmar Vase Carpet
332 × 254 cm · Navy, Red & Ivory
Hand-knotted in the classical vase-carpet vocabulary on a deep navy ground — woven in lustrous, silky-sheen highland wool, a Khorasan room-size piece from the 1970s–80s.
Kashmar — Khorasan Tradition
The town of Kashmar sits in the Khorasan region of northeastern Persia, an area whose weavers have produced large-format rugs for centuries. Kashmar production is recognised for confident reinterpretations of classical Persian compositions — vase carpets, garden carpets and floral medallions — woven at room-size scale for residential and reception interiors. This piece carries the vase carpet design, one of the most enduring vocabularies in the Persian decorative canon, with origins in the 16th- and 17th-century court production.
It was hand-knotted in Kashmar in the 1970s–80s from a notably fine, lustrous wool. The pile has the silky sheen prized in the best Khorasan production — the kind of wool that catches light and gives the densely drawn field real depth.
Colour and Composition
A deep navy-blue field is densely drawn with the vase-carpet vocabulary — flowering vases, birds and fine scrolling vinework climbing the field. At the centre sits an ivory and light-blue medallion with red and navy floral drawing. The field is framed by a deep red-rust main border of vases and palmettes, flanked by ivory and camel-gold guard borders. Detail throughout in ivory, camel-gold, light blue, olive-green and salmon gives the composition its richness, while the lustrous wool lends the whole a quiet glow. Ivory wool fringes finish the ends.
Presence in the Room
At 332 × 254 cm (8.4 m²) this is a generous room-size piece. Three contexts in which the Kashmar reaches its full effect:
- Living room anchor: Under a full seating arrangement, the vase composition grounds the space and the navy-and-red palette adds depth without dominating.
- Dining room: Beneath an eight-to-ten-seat table, the durable lustrous wool withstands chair traffic, and the classical composition holds its own under overhead lighting.
- Reception or library: The navy ground and traditional vocabulary suit a room organised around bookshelves, antique furniture and dark wood detailing.
