Vintage Beni Mguild Berber Rug
435 × 190 cm · Magenta & Purple
Provenance and Tribal Heritage
The Beni Mguild are one of the great Berber tribal confederations of Morocco's Middle Atlas mountains. Their rugs are hand-knotted by Berber women on simple upright looms, most often in compact household formats sized for the spaces in which they were originally used. At 435 × 190 cm, this piece is genuinely rare: the long, narrow proportion only emerges when the weaver has the space — and the time — to commit to a single extended composition, and the structural integrity to support a piece of this length on a village loom.
This piece was hand-knotted by Berber weavers in the Beni Mguild region of the Middle Atlas, Morocco between approximately 1970 and 1990, entirely in 100% hand-spun sheep's wool in both pile and foundation — the traditional Berber wool-on-wool construction. The thick, plush pile carries the soft hand and quiet warmth that defines authentic Atlas weaving. The composition follows the Beni Mguild abstract diamond lattice that runs the full length of the field, drawn freely rather than mathematically — each lozenge a small individual variation.
Colour and Composition
The palette is what sets this Beni Mguild apart: a deep, saturated magenta-to-purple field, the rich berry tone that the Atlas weavers traditionally draw from cochineal, the natural dye prized for its luminous depth. The colour is alive with abrash — the gentle horizontal striations that arise when hand-spun, naturally dyed wool is woven in small batches — shifting between fuchsia, plum and softer lilac-greige in the diamond drawing. The free-form lattice gives the long format a clear visual rhythm, while the vivid natural colour makes the rug a genuine statement piece.
Presence in the Room
At 435 × 190 cm (6.2 × 14.3 ft), 8.3 m² this is a large-format piece in a rare elongated proportion. Three contexts in which the long Beni Mguild reaches its full effect:
- Long living room or loft corridor: the elongated 435 cm length is ideal as an anchor for a long sofa group or as the visual spine of an open-plan loft, where the saturated colour becomes the focal point.
- Hallway or open spine of a modern apartment: the format and the vivid palette welcome visitors with confidence; the diamond lattice reads as a sustained visual rhythm.
- Bedroom lengthwise: placed alongside a king-size bed, the long Beni Mguild becomes a soft tactile foundation with a bold, characterful palette.
