Provenance and Manufactory Heritage

Hand-knotted in the celebrated weaving city of Kashan in central Iran, this is a finely drawn carpet in the classical Kashan tradition. Kashan lies on an ancient Silk Road route and has been renowned for its weaving since the fifteenth century, when European royalty and nobility commissioned carpets from its looms for their courts.

The piece is signed with a woven master's cartouche in the upper border — the mark of a named workshop, and a feature reserved for carpets of higher ambition. It is worked in fine, lustrous wool on a cotton foundation, with the precise, drawing-led articulation for which the best Kashans are prized: small blossoms, leaf veins and slender tendrils rendered cleanly across a very large field.

Colour and Composition

The carpet's defining quality is its soft sage-green ground — an unusual and sought-after colour for a Kashan, calm and luminous where most are red or ivory. At the centre sits a round floral medallion in light blue and ivory with a salmon-and-copper lattice core, issuing pendants top and bottom; large ivory cloud-band spandrels anchor the corners, and between them runs a finely drawn floral field of palmettes, rosettes and curling vine.

The palette is gentle and harmonious: sage green and ivory carry soft and navy blues, salmon and copper, and small accents of red and green. A broad celadon main border of palmettes, framed by ivory guard borders, completes a composition of quiet, aristocratic restraint.

Presence in the Room

At 434 × 315 cm (13.7 m²) this is a true palace-format carpet for grand rooms. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:

• Reception room or grand salon: the sage-green ground keeps a large room calm and bright while anchoring full seating groups around the central medallion.
• Formal dining room or library: under a long table or in a panelled room, the soft palette and fine drawing reward close looking from every seat.
• Stately hall or modern open-plan space: the rare ground colour and classical drawing bring historical depth and a quiet focal point to a large contemporary interior.
