A Workshop-Grade Hunting Silk from Qum
Qum (Ghom) is the modern centre of Persian silk weaving. Its hunting compositions — shekargah in Persian — belong to the most ambitious work the region produces: layered, narrative, and technically demanding. This contemporary atelier piece is hand-knotted entirely in mulberry silk, with both pile and foundation in silk.
The Hunting Scene — Shekargah
The composition follows the classical shekargah canon: mounted hunters and prey arranged across a wooded field, framed by an architectural border. The genre traces back to Safavid court textiles of the sixteenth century and entered Qum's repertoire in the mid-twentieth century, where it became one of the city's signature designs. Each figure is drawn at fine scale — only silk pile at this knot density allows the detail to read sharply.
Placement
At 155 × 107 cm the piece works as an accent rug in a reading corner, beside a low table, or as a wall-mounted display in a library or salon. Silk's reflective quality changes with the angle of light — the same piece reads differently morning and evening. Use a non-slip pad on smooth flooring; suitable above underfloor heating. For a hunting composition of this caliber, a placement where the design can be viewed in full is recommended.
