Vintage Tabriz – Hand-Knotted Wool in a Muted, Distressed Beige & Grey
A vintage Tabriz from the 1950s–1970s, refined into the muted-vintage idiom – an allover floral drawing washed down to a near-monochrome beige and grey for the most minimalist contemporary interiors.
Provenance and Vintage Treatment
Tabriz, in northwestern Iran, is one of the oldest and most renowned centres of Persian weaving. This piece was hand-knotted there approximately 50 to 70 years ago and has lived a full first life. In recent years it has been carefully refined into the contemporary muted-vintage style: the pile has been heavily reduced so that the design survives mainly as a fine line drawing on the bare ground, and the saturated original colours have been washed out into a quiet, near-monochrome palette.
The field carries a classical allover floral design – palmettes, blossoms, vases and serrated leaves spread across the full surface, with no central medallion – now reading as delicate dark-grey and charcoal contours on a pale beige-greige ground. The wide, faintly drawn border carries soft scrolling cartouches and cloud-bands. The result is a Tabriz with a distinctly distressed, minimalist register – the original drawing is still legible, but the surface and chromatic vocabulary now read as fully contemporary. The piece is built from 100% wool on a cotton foundation, with a pile height of approximately 0.8 cm.

At 413 × 243 cm (10.0 m², approx. 14 × 8 ft) this is a generous extra-large room-size piece. Three contexts in which the vintage Tabriz reaches its full effect:
- Modern living room or loft: Anchoring a large sofa group of four to six pieces, the monochromatic beige-grey palette opens up the room without competing with contemporary furniture in linen, oak, concrete or pale leather.
- Long dining hall: Under a long table for eight to twelve, the muted floral field reads as a soft architectural pattern from above – perfectly suited for the rectangular format.
- Gallery space or minimal interior: In a space built around bold architectural elements and natural materials, the distressed Tabriz acts as a calm horizontal anchor that supports rather than dominates.
