Baluch Tribal Rug
225 × 118 cm · Red, Black & Ivory
A dense geometric lattice in deep red and black, framed by the classic ivory running-dog border — authentic hand-knotted tribal wool.
Baluch — Tribal Weaving of Central Asia
The Baluch (also Baluchi, Beluchi) are an Iranic ethnic group whose ancestral home is the cross-border region of Baluchistan, spanning eastern Iran, western Afghanistan and Pakistan. Historically nomadic and semi-nomadic, the Baluch wove on horizontal ground looms for personal use — prayer mats, bedding, storage bags — with motifs absorbed from Turkmen, Kurdish and Persian neighbours. The result is a distinctive tribal vocabulary: small-scale geometric repeats, stepped and hooked borders, and a palette built on deep reds, blacks and undyed ivory.
Colour and Composition
The field carries a dense all-over lattice of small stylised star-and-flower motifs in a staggered diagonal grid, worked in red and ivory on a dark (near-black) ground. This compact field is framed by a striking ivory main border with a black running-dog (meander / hooked) motif, set between several deep-red guard stripes that give the piece its warm, saturated overall tone. The drawing is purely geometric — there is no central medallion; the rhythm comes from the repetition of the small motifs and the bold zig-zag border.
Presence in the Room
At 225 × 118 cm (2.7 m²) this is an elongated small-format tribal piece, ideal as an accent or short runner. Three contexts in which the Baluch reaches its full effect:
- Bedside or beside-bed pair: the narrow proportion fits beside a single or double bed, the wool surface adding tactile warmth.
- Library or study: along a reading wall or beneath a writing desk, the dense tribal field reads as a clear, grounding anchor.
- Hallway or short corridor: the elongated format guides foot traffic on durable hand-knotted wool.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the “running-dog” border?
The running-dog (also called the meander or hooked border) is a continuous interlocking hook motif that runs around the rug like a chain. It is one of the oldest and most widespread tribal border patterns across Central Asia and the Caucasus, and on this piece it appears in black on an ivory ground — the brightest, most graphic element of the design.
Is each Baluch rug unique?
Yes. Tribal Baluch rugs are woven from memory rather than a paper cartoon, so no two are identical. Small irregularities in the grid, gentle abrash (tonal shifts in the wool), and slightly uneven borders are signs of authentic hand weaving, not flaws — they give each piece its individual character.
How do I care for a tribal wool rug?
Regular vacuuming without a beater bar is the basic care — vacuum in the direction of the pile. On smooth floors we recommend an anti-slip underlay. Blot spills immediately with cold water and a light cotton cloth, never rub. Tribal wool is naturally hard-wearing and ages beautifully; professional hand washing every few years keeps the colours fresh.
