Heritage and Design Idea

The Tibetan tiger is one of the oldest motifs in Himalayan textile culture. For centuries, tiger rugs in the small Khaden format were used in Tibetan monasteries and palaces as seats for high lamas and as honour places for rulers and teachers — the tiger itself symbolising power, protective strength and spiritual vigilance.

This piece takes that iconography and scales it to a contemporary room-size format of 350 × 250 cm, treating the tiger as a single graphic statement on a calm beige field. The drawing language is reduced and geometric in the spirit of Art Deco — clean outlines, balanced proportion, decorative restraint — rather than the dense ornament of a traditional Khaden.

Material and Construction

Hand-knotted in our Nepalese partner workshops in 100% wool on cotton warp and weft, Tibetan-tradition knotting. The composition pairs a warm beige ground with darker caramel-to-charcoal contours and shading for the tiger.

Quality Line — Djoharian Design Elegance

This piece is hand-knotted in our Elegance line at 80 kpsi (knots per square inch) in Changpai highland wool — one step above the foundation Naturals quality (60 kpsi). The higher density yields a finer drawing of the tiger contour and a more substantial hand. The same design is available on order in Naturals (60), Luxury (100) and Executive (150).

Presence in the Room

At 350 × 250 cm (8 × 11 ft), 8.75 m² this is a true room-size format. Three contexts in which the Art Deco tiger reaches its full effect:

• Living room as a statement piece: in front of a reduced sofa arrangement the tiger becomes the visual anchor of the room — a single, considered gesture.
• Dining room with character: beneath a rectangular dining table the tiger lends a theatrical, almost stage-like quality to every evening.
• Generously scaled office or loft: in an open workspace or industrial loft the tiger breaks the rigour and introduces an artistic note into the architecture.
