Beni Ourain Lion Design Rug
185 × 125 cm · Ivory & Charcoal
A Beni Ourain Berber rug with a stylised lion at its centre — hand-knotted in cream highland wool, in the unmistakable Middle Atlas vocabulary of charcoal lines on an ivory ground.
Provenance and Berber Heritage
The Beni Ourain are a confederation of Berber tribes who have lived for centuries in the Middle Atlas mountains of northern Morocco. Their hand-knotted rugs are one of the most internationally recognised design families in the Moroccan canon — unmistakable for their cream highland wool grounds and charcoal-line geometric motifs. Originally woven as functional blankets for the cold mountain winters, Beni Ourain rugs became icons of mid-20th-century design, the natural counterpoint to clean modernist architecture.
This piece was hand-knotted by Beni Ourain weavers in the Middle Atlas mountains of Morocco, from undyed cream highland wool on a cotton foundation. The composition departs from the classical Beni Ourain lozenge vocabulary by placing a stylised lion at the centre of the field — a figural element drawn in the same charcoal lines as the surrounding border. The lion is a rare and personal touch from the weaver, turning the rug from pure abstract geometry into a quietly figurative composition.
Colour and Composition
The palette is the classical Beni Ourain idiom: a cream ivory ground with the drawing in charcoal-brown, in the natural undyed colours of the highland wool. At the centre stands the stylised lion — upright tail, striped body, blocky maned head — outlined in the same hand. The field is framed by a double charcoal-line border filled with small scattered tribal devices (arrow, sprig and dot motifs). Knotted wool fringes finish both ends. Minimal, graphic and two-tone, it rewards both quick reading and close looking.
Presence in the Room
At 185 × 125 cm (2.3 m²) this is a focused small-to-medium format. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- Modern living room: The cream-and-charcoal palette is the textbook pairing with mid-century furniture, raw oak and Scandinavian-modern interiors.
- Children's room or family space: The lion gives the rug a quietly playful character that works particularly well in rooms shared with children.
- Bedroom or reading nook: The thick highland wool gives a warm, tactile foundation, and the figural composition rewards close looking.
