Oushak Medallion Rug — Red & Navy, Classic Linked-Medallion Field 7 × 14 ft
A twentieth-century hand-knotted Ushak in the classical medallion tradition of western Anatolia, worked in wool on a deep navy ground around 1950.
Provenance and Weaving Heritage
Hand-knotted in the weaving tradition of Ushak (Uşak) in western Anatolia, Turkey — one of the oldest and most celebrated carpet-weaving centres of the Ottoman world. From the fifteenth to the seventeenth century the workshops of Ushak produced the great medallion and star carpets now held in major museum collections, and their designs appear in the paintings of Renaissance masters such as Holbein and Lotto.
This piece is a twentieth-century hand-knotted interpretation, made around 1950, after a classical sixteenth/seventeenth-century Ushak medallion design. It is worked in lustrous wool on a stable cotton foundation, the pattern drawn cleanly across a deep indigo field.
Colour and Composition
A vertical chain of linked medallions runs down the centre of a deep navy-blue field — large lobed medallions in luminous red alternating with dark cartouches, each filled with finely drawn palmettes, rosettes and curling vine. Light powder-blue spandrels carry the floral drawing into the corners.
A broad red main border of rosettes and palmettes frames the field, worked in light blue, gold-camel and ivory with small accents of rose. The overall palette balances red and navy with light blue, gold-camel and ivory.
Presence in the Room
At 412 × 228 cm (9.4 m²) this is an extra-large room-size carpet. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
- Grand living room or salon: the deep navy ground anchors a full seating group while the red medallion chain gives a warm central focus.
- Large dining room: under a long table, where the densely drawn field keeps its effect even beneath the furniture.
- Reception room or hall: a decorative furnishing piece that brings colour, depth and a classical focal point to a large interior.
