Vintage Bakhtiar Tribal Rug — Hand-Knotted Zagros Wool 7 × 10 ft
A mid-twentieth-century village weaving from the Bakhtiar lands of south-west Iran, with a floral medallion in madder red and indigo.
The Bakhtiar Weaving Tradition
The Bakhtiar (Bachtiari) are one of the great tribal confederations of the Zagros Mountains in south-west Iran, and their rugs are among the most characterful of the Persian village weavings. While the tribe is best known for the geometric “garden” compartment rugs, its village workshops also produced a more curvilinear, floral repertoire — and this piece belongs firmly to that second tradition. The result is a robust, warm-hearted rug with the colour confidence of a tribal weaving and the drawing of a town carpet.
This is a genuine mid-twentieth-century piece, hand-knotted in pure Zagros highland wool and coloured with traditional vegetable and mineral dyes. Decades of use have given it a gentle, even patina — the mark of an authentic vintage rug rather than a new production.
Design and Colour
The composition is built around a central floral medallion with matching spandrels in the corners, set on a deep madder-red field and framed by a broad indigo-blue main border. The field and medallion are filled with finely drawn flowerheads, rosettes, palmettes and curling vinework, with small birds worked into the pattern — a hallmark of the more pictorial Bakhtiar weavings. The palette is richly polychrome: madder red and indigo carry ivory, rose and old-pink, soft greens, saffron-yellow and touches of brown. It is a lively, optimistic rug rather than a muted one.
Presence in the Room
At 300 × 200 cm (6.0 m²) this is a generous room-size rug. Three settings in which it works particularly well:
- Living room: Beneath a seating group, the deep red ground anchors the room and the floral drawing rewards a closer look.
- Library or study: The warm, traditional palette and dense pattern suit a room of books and dark wood.
- Dining room: Robust tribal wool stands up to chairs and daily use, while the polychrome field hides everyday wear.
