Loribaft Atash Rug
204 × 155 cm · Mustard · Tree-of-Life Allover

A refined Persian Loribaft — hand-knotted in wool, with rows of small flowering trees scattered across a warm mustard field.

Loribaft Atash — A Refined Gabbeh Tradition

The Loribaft is the refined cousin of the Gabbeh: a contemporary reading of the traditional nomadic Persian rug, with a tighter weave, finer wool and a clearer compositional discipline than the bold, minimal Gabbeh. Woven by the Lori people of the Zagros mountains, the Loribaft keeps the warm, hand-dyed wool of the nomadic tradition while allowing more detailed drawing. Atash denotes the finer grade within the Loribaft family — a higher knot density that permits the crisp, small-scale drawing seen across this field.

Colour and Composition

The field carries a Tree-of-Life allover — staggered rows of small, stylised flowering trees and blossoming shrubs spread evenly across a glowing mustard-gold ground. Each little tree is drawn in a different combination of blues, greens, rust, ivory and black, so the repeat reads lively rather than mechanical. A deep wine-red main border with a floral vine, framed by narrow guard stripes, closes the composition. The Tree of Life is one of the oldest motifs in the Persian decorative canon — a symbol of growth, fertility and the link between earth and sky — here multiplied into a calm, all-over rhythm rather than a single central image. The hand-dyed wool keeps the mustard ground alive and slightly variegated.

Presence in the Room

At 204 × 155 cm (3.2 m²) this is a focused medium-format piece in a warm mustard palette. Three contexts in which the Loribaft Atash reaches its full effect:

  • Modern living room: beneath a sofa or armchair pairing, the mustard field grounds a contemporary space with a warm, lived-in quality.
  • Bedroom anchor: at the foot of a bed, the dense wool surface and scattered tree motifs add tactile depth and quiet narrative.
  • Home office or studio: against architectural materials, the wine-red border and golden field become a warm textile counterpoint to hard lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Loribaft, and how does it differ from a Gabbeh?

Both are woven by the Lori and Qashqai nomads of south-west Persia. The Gabbeh is the older, bolder type — thick pile, few colours, large minimal forms. The Loribaft (“woven by the Lori”) is its finer relative: a tighter knot count allows more detailed drawing, such as the small Tree-of-Life motifs here, while keeping the warm hand-dyed wool and soft handle of the nomadic tradition. The Atash grade marks the finer end of Loribaft production, with a higher knot density.

What does the Tree-of-Life motif mean?

The Tree of Life is among the oldest motifs in Persian and wider Oriental weaving — a symbol of growth, fertility and the connection between earth and heaven. On this rug it appears not as a single central tree but as an allover repeat: rows of small flowering trees scattered across the field, giving a calm, garden-like rhythm.

How do I care for a hand-knotted wool rug?

Regular vacuuming without a beater bar is the basic care — vacuum in the direction of the pile. On smooth floors we recommend an anti-slip underlay. Blot spills immediately with cold water and a light cotton cloth, never rub. For thorough cleaning we recommend professional hand washing every few years, depending on use. Hand-dyed wool is naturally dirt-repellent and resilient.

Excellent experience with the seller, Karl. He responded to all my questions. In addition to the photos on the website, he sent even more photos and a video of the rug, which is exactly as it appeared. The purchase was simple. Shipping was via UPS and the rug arrived one week later.

We were unsure which rug to choose, and wanted a rug that was in almost new condition. Karl was very honest about the conditions of the rug, even details/"defects" that we cannto necessarily see on a computer screen, In the end, our Tibetan rug came early which was perfect timing for our new home, and in the good condition just as Karl described. We absolutely love our new rug. Thank you.
