Baluch Tribal Rug
190 × 122 cm · Red, Black & Ivory
Rows of bold octagonal güls on a deep red field, framed by ivory meander borders — authentic hand-knotted tribal wool.
Baluch — Tribal Weaving of Central Asia
The Baluch (also Baluchi, Beluchi) are an Iranic ethnic group whose ancestral home is the cross-border region of Baluchistan, spanning eastern Iran, western Afghanistan and Pakistan. Historically nomadic and semi-nomadic, the Baluch wove on horizontal ground looms for personal use — prayer mats, bedding, storage bags — with motifs absorbed from Turkmen, Kurdish and Persian neighbours. The result is a distinctive tribal vocabulary: bold geometric güls, stepped and hooked borders, and a palette built on deep reds, blacks and undyed ivory.
Colour and Composition
The field carries regular rows of bold octagonal güls — stepped, serrated tribal medallions in black and aubergine with ivory outlines and small floral centres — set against a saturated red ground, with smaller lozenge motifs filling the spaces between. The field is framed by multiple borders carrying a meander / running-dog hook motif and zig-zag stripes in black, ivory and red. Small stylised animal figures appear along the lower border — a charming, characteristic touch of authentic tribal weaving. The drawing is purely geometric; the rhythm comes from the steady repeat of the güls.
Presence in the Room
At 190 × 122 cm (2.3 m²) this is a focused small-format tribal piece. Three contexts in which the Baluch reaches its full effect:
- Library or study: beside a writing desk or reading chair, the gül field reads as a clear, grounding anchor.
- Bedside accent: beside a bed, the wool surface and warm red palette add tactile warmth.
- Modern entryway: against architectural materials, the bold tribal geometry becomes a quiet textile statement.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a gül?
A gül is a medallion-like motif — often octagonal or lozenge-shaped — repeated in rows across the field. It is the signature device of Turkmen and Baluch tribal weaving, with each tribe historically favouring its own gül variant. On this piece the güls are stepped and serrated, drawn in black and ivory on the red ground.
Why are there small animal figures in the border?
Small stylised animals — birds, deer or camels — are a recurring feature of tribal Baluch rugs, woven from memory by the weaver as personal, often symbolic touches. They are a hallmark of an authentic village piece rather than a workshop reproduction, and add to each rug's individual character.
How do I care for a tribal wool rug?
Regular vacuuming without a beater bar is the basic care — vacuum in the direction of the pile. On smooth floors we recommend an anti-slip underlay. Blot spills immediately with cold water and a light cotton cloth, never rub. Tribal wool is naturally hard-wearing and ages beautifully; professional hand washing every few years keeps the colours fresh.
