Fine Isfahan Medallion Rug
11 × 7 ft · 331 × 201 cm · Red Field, Blue Medallion
Kurkwool and natural silk on a pure silk warp — a red field carrying a blue central medallion.
Isfahan — The Safavid High Point
In the 16th and 17th centuries, under the Safavids, Isfahan was the capital of Persia and the centre of the courtly arts — carpet knotting among them, at its highest level. The most famous surviving example of this tradition is the "Emperor's Carpet" in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a Safavid masterpiece that set the gold standard for every generation since. This contemporary Isfahan carries that legacy into the modern interior — with the same technical discipline and compositional precision.
Material and Construction
The pile combines finest Kurkwool with natural silk (approx. 90 % wool / 10 % silk) — the wool carries the body while the silk picks out contours and accents and catches the shifting light. The foundation is a pure natural silk warp, the construction class that makes the region's finest knotting possible in the first place. The palette is classical Isfahan: a powerful red carries the field, a deep blue forms the central medallion and the framing borders, with ivory and light-blue opening the composition.
Presence in the Room
At 331 × 201 cm (6.7 m², approx. 11 × 7 ft) this is a generous room-size piece. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
-
Stately living room: beneath a full seating group the medallion anchors the composition; the red field brings warmth and depth without overpowering.
-
Dining room: beneath a large table the silk-and-wool construction is hard-wearing and develops its full lustre under candle or ceiling light.
-
Gallery or library: a classical Persian composition as the visual centre of a room built for collecting and reading. A piece of this quality is also a lasting investment.
