Vintage Beni M'Guild Berber Rug
12 × 6 ft · 365 × 195 cm · Red & Charcoal
A plush-pile Middle Atlas Berber from around 1970 — a stacked diamond lattice in carmine red, charcoal and cream.
Provenance and Tribal Heritage
The Beni M'Guild are one of the great Berber tribal confederations of Morocco's Middle Atlas mountains. Their rugs are woven by the women of the tribe in a craft passed from generation to generation, each motif drawn from a visual vocabulary older than the modern Moroccan state. This piece was hand-knotted around 1970 in the traditional wool-on-wool construction — hand-spun sheep's wool in both pile and foundation — with the deep, plush pile (approx. 2.5 cm) that distinguishes authentic Atlas weaving from contemporary imitations.
Colour and Composition
The field is built from a bold vertically stacked diamond lattice — large concentric diamonds running the full length of the rug, filled with fine dotted and hooked tribal detailing and the occasional checkerboard panel. The palette is a saturated, lightly abrashed carmine red set against charcoal-black outlines and a heathered cream and soft pink, the mix of dyed and undyed wool giving the surface its characteristic mottled depth. The drawing reads as both archaic and unmistakably contemporary — the kind of graphic statement minimalist interiors are built around.
Presence in the Room
At 365 × 195 cm (7.1 m², approx. 12 × 6 ft) this is a generous, long large room-size piece. Three contexts in which it reaches its full effect:
-
Minimalist loft: the red-and-cream palette and deep pile anchor a reduced interior with tactile warmth and tribal depth.
-
Family space: the soft, heavy pile and abstract motifs work particularly well in rooms shared with children and pets.
-
Study or library: the saturated palette pairs naturally with dark wood, leather and books for a vibrant focal point.
