Zarah Beni Ourain Leopard
200 × 153 cm · Ivory & Grey
Provenance and Zarah Collection
The Zarah collection is a Djoharian Design creation — sister line to our Sabah, woven by the same experienced women in the region of Khenifra in Morocco. Where Sabah stays in calm minimalist tones, Zarah turns up the graphic intent: an abstract leopard / cheetah pattern that reads as both archaic and contemporary. The leopard idiom is one of the oldest figurative motifs in textile art, here translated into the disciplined Beni Ourain construction.
This piece was hand-knotted in the Khenifra region of Morocco from 100% imported fine merino wool on a wool foundation, with a deep pile of 18 to 22 mm. The pile is built from fine merino rather than the traditional hand-spun Berber wool, which gives Zarah pieces a more uniform surface under foot.
Colour and Composition
An elegant interplay of cool ivory-cream and grey, rendered in soft leopard markings that animate the surface without overwhelming a room. The ground is a clean, cool ivory rather than a warm beige, and the spotted motif is drawn in the abstract idiom of Berber tradition — not photorealistic but evocative. The muted palette ensures the rug works as a graphic focal point rather than a literal animal-print statement.
Presence in the Room
At 200 × 153 cm (5 × 7 ft), 3.1 m² this is a generous small-to-medium format that sits at the upper edge of the small range. Three contexts in which the Zarah reaches its full effect:
- Living room focal point: anchoring a single armchair or a quiet conversation grouping, the leopard pattern adds graphic intent without overwhelming a contemporary scheme.
- Foot of the bed: the merino pile and the abstract pattern give a personal space considered tactile and visual depth.
- Under a writing desk or reading chair: the muted leopard reads as a confident accent in a study or library, particularly beside warm wood and leather.
